I feel like there must be some major thing I'm missing: what exactly makes Ms. Ferraro's remark regarding Mr. Obama racist? I think it might point out a rather subtle racism in the media, but I'm not sure that it is false. Is it possible for the truth to be racist?

I don't think it's true in any way that a politician could succeed in the US solely because s/he is non-white. There have been a lot of people interviewed during the primaries who have said stuff implying he's the first black person they've ever considered voting for. I suspect that's much more common than the other way around.

It's also possible that the racism is a couple of layers down.
One way to look at it - he wouldn't be where he is today if it weren't for his rhetoric. His public speaking style is straight out of the African-American preaching tradition, so if he weren't black, he wouldn't be able to speak that way, so he wouldn't be so successful. A bit round about. I'm making that up - I have no idea what she was thinking.
